If you've ever sat down to book a brow appointment and found yourself staring at "tint", "dye" and "cream dye" with absolutely no idea which one to choose — this post is for you.

The difference matters more than most people realise. The right formula for your brows depends on your natural hair colour, your skin tone, how long you want the colour to last and the finish you're after. Get it right and your brows look effortlessly polished for weeks. Get it wrong and you're dealing with a result that's either too subtle to notice or too intense for your face.

Here's how to work it out.

What's included in a brow colour service at TGS

Every brow colour appointment at TGS starts with a brow scrub to prep the skin and remove build-up. Then I free-map your ideal shape before applying your chosen pigment. After processing, the hairs are conditioned and a colour-fixing lotion locks in vibrancy. The appointment ends with personalised styling and brow care advice.

The formula — tint, dye or cream dye — is chosen based on your natural hair colour, skin tone and the finish you're after. It's never a standard mix applied to everyone.

At TGS, brow colour is available as part of the Brow Design Package for new clients ($185 — includes brow wax and colour, your choice of lash colour or lip wax and an express facial). For returning clients, Brow Wax & Colour is available as an add-on from $77.50.

Brow tint — soft and natural

Tint is the gentlest option and a great starting point if you've never had your brows coloured professionally before.

It delivers a subtle wash of colour to both the brow hairs and the skin beneath — enhancing what's already there rather than dramatically changing it. The finish is soft and natural, and it wears off gradually rather than all at once.

Results: Lasts 2–3 days on the skin, up to 3 weeks on the brow hairs.

Best for: Light or fair brows · clients who prefer a natural, makeup-free look · sensitive skin · anyone wanting soft definition without a bold change.

Brow dye — defined and longer lasting

Dye offers deeper, more saturated pigment with noticeably longer-lasting results. It stains both the skin and the hair more intensely than tint, creating a more defined, makeup-ready finish.

It's particularly effective for filling in sparse or uneven areas — the skin stain mimics the effect of a brow pencil without you having to apply one every morning.

Results: Lasts 5–7 days on the skin, up to 6 weeks on the brow hairs.

Best for: Sparse or uneven brows · medium to dark natural brow tones · clients wanting bold definition · anyone who wants their brows to look done without daily effort.

Cream dye — hydrating and balanced

Cream dye sits between tint and dye — richer pigment than tint, but gentler on the skin than traditional dye. Its nourishing formula conditions the brow hairs during processing, which makes it a particularly good choice for brows that are dry, porous or have been through a lot of lamination.

Results: Lasts 3–5 days on the skin, up to 5 weeks on the brow hairs.

Best for: Dry or porous brow hairs · clients wanting bold colour without intense skin staining · anyone who wants long-lasting colour with a conditioning benefit.

What about henna?

Henna brows use natural plant-derived pigment and stain the skin more deeply than any of the above — creating a very sculpted, filled-in finish. It's not something I currently offer at TGS, but if you're curious about it, get in touch and I can point you in the right direction.

Aftercare — making your colour last

The first 24–48 hours after your appointment are the most important for colour longevity.

  • Keep brows dry and avoid steam, saunas or heavy workouts
  • Skip makeup or exfoliants directly on the brow area
  • Cleanse gently around the brows without scrubbing over them
  • Apply Brow Code Growth Oil daily to nourish and condition

Maintaining your colour at home

A good in-salon treatment gives you the base — your daily routine makes it last.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I rebook? Every 2–3 weeks if you want the skin stain maintained, or every 4–6 weeks for brow hair colour.

Is brow colour safe for sensitive skin? Yes — I choose the formula based on your skin sensitivity. If you're prone to reactions, mention it when booking and I'll recommend a patch test 48 hours beforehand.

Will it help with sparse brows? Dye and cream dye are particularly effective for sparse brows — the skin stain fills in gaps and creates the appearance of fuller, more defined brows without needing to fill them in daily.

How do I prepare for my appointment? Arrive with clean, makeup-free brows. Avoid fake tan on your face for at least 72 hours before your appointment.

Can I have brow colour with lamination? Yes — brow colour is included as standard in every brow lamination at TGS. If you've had lamination elsewhere and just need a colour refresh, that's the Brow Lamination Maintenance appointment.
