If you've been looking into dermaplaning — smooth skin, peach fuzz gone, instant glow — I completely understand the appeal. It's everywhere right now and the before and afters look incredible.
But here's what those before and afters don't always show: how quickly the results fade, and what can go wrong for certain skin types.
At TGS I don't offer dermaplaning. Instead I offer the Smooth Operator Treatment — an alkaline-based exfoliation that removes peach fuzz and dead skin cell build-up while actively supporting your skin barrier rather than compromising it. Here's why I made that choice, and how to work out which approach is right for your skin.
What is dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning uses a surgical blade to scrape away dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (peach fuzz) from the surface of the skin. It delivers an immediate glow and a genuinely smooth finish — but the results are surface-level and typically last 2–3 weeks before peach fuzz regrows and skin texture returns.
Where dermaplaning can cause problems:
- The scraping action can cause micro-tears in the skin, leading to redness and sensitivity — particularly for reactive or sensitised skin
- For acne-prone skin, a blade moving across active breakouts or congestion can spread bacteria and worsen the situation
- It doesn't address what's happening beneath the surface — congestion, pigmentation, keratin build-up — so results are largely cosmetic and temporary
For the right client with the right skin, dermaplaning can be effective. But it's not appropriate for everyone, and for sensitive or acne-prone skin specifically, it can do more harm than good.
What is the Smooth Operator Treatment?
The Smooth Operator Treatment uses the DermaFix Conditioning Alkaline Wash to dissolve keratin proteins — the bonds that hold dead skin cells, peach fuzz and surface debris in place. Rather than scraping, it dissolves. Rather than cutting hair at the surface, it removes it at the root.
The result is the same smooth, fresh-faced finish — without the blade, without the micro-tears and with active barrier support built into every step.
What's included: Cleanse · Alkaline Wash exfoliation (removes peach fuzz and keratin build-up) · neutralising mask · cooling skin support · hyaluronic acid serum · barrier protection infusion · SPF · aftercare advice.
$200 · 1 hour 10 minutes · available to new and returning clients.
How they compare
Peach fuzz removal Both remove peach fuzz. Dermaplaning cuts at the surface — the Smooth Operator dissolves at the root, which means smoother regrowth and no risk of ingrown hairs.
Exfoliation depth Dermaplaning exfoliates at the surface. The alkaline wash dissolves keratin at a deeper level, unclogging pores and refining texture more thoroughly.
Skin barrier impact Dermaplaning can compromise the skin barrier through the scraping action. The Smooth Operator Treatment includes neutralising and barrier protection steps specifically designed to leave skin calm and supported after treatment.
Suitability for sensitive or reactive skin Dermaplaning — use with caution. Smooth Operator Treatment — generally well tolerated, with the neutralising and cooling steps reducing post-treatment sensitivity.
Suitability for acne-prone skin Dermaplaning — not recommended for active breakouts. Smooth Operator Treatment — the alkaline wash can actually help with congestion rather than spreading it.
Results longevity Both deliver immediate smoothness. The Smooth Operator Treatment's deeper exfoliation means the texture improvement tends to last longer and build with regular treatments.
Which one is right for you?
Consider the Smooth Operator Treatment if:
- Your skin is sensitive, reactive or prone to redness
- You have active breakouts or congestion
- You want peach fuzz removal with barrier support included
- You're looking for results that build over time rather than a one-off fix
- You've tried dermaplaning and found the results didn't last or caused irritation
Dermaplaning might suit you if:
- Your skin is not sensitive or acne-prone
- You've had it before without issues
- You're comfortable with blade-based treatments
I don't offer dermaplaning at TGS — but if you're genuinely considering it, I'd rather have an honest conversation about whether it's right for your skin than just tell you what you want to hear. Get in touch before booking anywhere and I'm happy to chat it through.
