You know that feeling when you look in the mirror and your skin just looks... meh? Not bad exactly, just tired. A bit dull. Like it's lost whatever it had going for it.
It's one of the most common things clients describe when they first come in for a skin consultation at TGS. And the good news is — it's almost always fixable. Usually faster than people expect.
Here's what's actually causing it and what to do about it.
Why does skin go dull?
Dullness isn't one thing — it's usually a combination of a few things happening at once. Here are the most common culprits I see in clinic:
Dead skin cell build-up As we get older, our skin's natural renewal cycle slows down. Dead cells that would previously have shed on their own start hanging around on the surface, creating a layer that blocks light from reflecting evenly. The result is that flat, uneven, slightly rough look that no amount of moisturiser seems to fix.
The solution here isn't more product — it's exfoliation. Regular, appropriate exfoliation (not harsh scrubbing) removes that surface layer and lets fresher skin underneath show through.
Dehydration Dehydrated skin looks dull, feels tight and loses that plump, light-reflecting quality that makes skin look healthy. This is different from dry skin — dehydration is a lack of water in the skin, not a lack of oil, and it can affect any skin type including oily skin.
Hyaluronic acid is your best friend here. The DermaFix ACC Hyaluronic Gel draws water into the skin and holds it there — apply it to slightly damp skin before your moisturiser for best results.
Sun damage accumulating Perth's UV index is no joke, and the effects of UV exposure accumulate over years before they become visible as pigmentation, uneven texture and loss of radiance. If you're not wearing SPF every single day — overcast days included — you're adding to a backlog your skin will eventually have to show.
Stress and poor sleep Cortisol from stress causes inflammation and slows skin repair. Poor sleep means your skin doesn't get the overnight recovery time it needs. Both show up on your face faster than most people realise — and neither can be fixed with skincare alone, as much as I wish they could.
Your routine isn't working as hard as it could Sometimes dullness is simply a sign that your current products aren't doing enough for where your skin is right now. Skin changes — with age, with seasons, with hormones — and a routine that worked brilliantly a year ago might not be cutting it anymore.
The routine I recommend for dull, tired skin
This isn't a ten-step routine. It's a focused, consistent approach using products that actually move the needle.
Morning
Cleanse Start with the DermaFix Brightening Cleanser — infused with Kojic Acid and Vitamin C, it removes overnight build-up while gently working on uneven tone. Apply, leave for a minute or two, then rinse with warm water. For an extra exfoliation boost, mix with half a teaspoon of DermaFix DermaPolish two to three times a week.
Tone Spray the DermaFix Brightening Toner onto a cotton pad and smooth over face, neck and décolletage. It balances your skin's pH and prepares it to absorb everything that follows.
Vitamin C serum This is the step that makes the biggest visible difference for dull skin. The DermaFix Ferulic + Vitamin C + E serum protects against environmental damage throughout the day and brightens over time. Apply before your moisturiser while skin is still slightly damp.
Moisturise The DermaFix Bio-Hydrating Cream seals in everything you've applied and supports your skin barrier. Dot it over face, neck and décolletage, then spray a little of your toner into your hands and massage both in together — it helps with absorption.
SPF — non-negotiable The Mother SPF Mineral Matte Tinted SPF 50 is the one I recommend to almost every client. It protects, it blurs, and it sits beautifully under makeup or alone. Without daily SPF, every other step in your routine is working against the damage that's still being done.
Evening
Double cleanse Remove SPF, makeup and the day's pollution properly. One cleanse after a full day of SPF isn't enough — cleanse twice with the DermaFix Hydra-Silk Cleanser for a genuinely clean base.
Tone Same as morning — the Brightening Toner to balance and prep.
Active treatment — 2 to 3 nights a week This is where you actually correct dullness rather than just maintaining. The DermaFix ACC Retinol+ speeds up cell renewal, reduces the appearance of fine lines and smooths texture over time. Start two to three nights a week if you're new to retinol and always use SPF the following morning — this is not optional.
If you're not ready for retinol yet or have sensitive skin, the DermaFix Resveratrol+ Corrective Serum is a gentler alternative that still brightens and supports collagen.
Hydrating serum The DermaFix ACC Hyaluronic Gel on other evenings — or layered under your retinol on active nights if your skin tolerates it.
Night moisturiser Slightly richer than your morning cream to support overnight repair.
Weekly additions
A hydrating mask once or twice a week makes a noticeable difference for skin that's been looking flat. The DermaFix Vitamin Therapy Masque restores deep hydration and is one of my favourites for tired, dull skin that needs a reset.
When home care isn't enough
A good home routine is essential — but it can only do so much. Professional treatments work at a level that skincare products simply can't reach, and they accelerate everything you're doing at home.
For dull, tired or dehydrated skin, the Signature Enzyme Treatment is the one I recommend most often. It combines targeted exfoliation, a professional DermaFix enzyme masque, vitamin infusion and a relaxing massage — and clients consistently walk out looking noticeably brighter and more rested than when they walked in.
It's $280 for new clients and includes a full skin consultation at your first appointment. We'll look at what you're using at home, what's working and what we can do in-clinic to get your skin moving in the right direction.
Frequently asked questions
How quickly will I see results? Most clients notice brighter, smoother skin within 2 weeks of consistent routine use. Deeper improvements to texture and pigmentation take 4–6 weeks and continue to build with ongoing use.
Can I use Vitamin C and retinol together? Yes — but not at the same time. Vitamin C in the morning, retinol at night. They work better separately and using both together can cause irritation.
How often should I exfoliate? Two to three times a week is ideal for most skin types. More than that and you risk disrupting your skin barrier — which causes more problems than it solves.
I've tried lots of products and nothing works. What am I missing? Probably a proper skin assessment. Products can only work if they're right for your skin — and what's right for your skin now might be completely different to what it was a year ago. A skin consultation at TGS is the best starting point if you feel like you're going in circles.
Ready to get your skin moving?
If your skin has been looking flat and you're not sure where to start — a skin consultation is the answer. It's included with your first skin treatment at TGS, or available as a standalone appointment at $180 if you want expert guidance before committing to a treatment.
